Every consumer has the right to service in the state language in accordance with the Law of Ukraine "On ensuring the functioning of the Ukrainian language as the state language."

What does this mean in practice?

By default, customer service in all areas should be in Ukrainian. The requirement applies to all areas of service, from trade in supermarkets to educational services in clubs.

Of course, the consumer has the right to ask to serve him in the language of his minority, including in Russian, because it depends on the wishes of the customer's language of service. The rule does not apply to territories in which another language is recognized as regional (by decision of the territorial community).

Service means not only direct oral communication of the subject of services with the consumer, but also written submission of information - through instructions, markings, menus, tickets, etc.

What can you, as a consumer, do if you are refused service in Ukrainian?


Among the ways to protect rights in such cases will be the most optimal:

  • Addressing a letter or statement directly to the business entity that violated your rights.

  • Writing a complaint to the State Service of Ukraine for Food Safety and Consumer Protection, which is authorized to impose a fine on the violator.

  • Appeal to the court for violation of consumer rights.
